June 13, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Kansas City Monarchs News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Kansas City T-Bones (14-9) offense was held in check by RedHawks hurlers for the second straight game as Fargo-Moorhead (15-6) extended their first-place lead with a 3-1 win in the rubber match of a three-game series at Newman Outdoor Field this afternoon.
Rico Washington drove in the T-Bones lone run with a two-out home run against Chad Rhoades (3-0) in the first inning. Kansas City got back-to-back singles to begin the second, but Rhoades induced a bases-loaded double play to end the frame. Rhoades faced just one over the minimum through the next four innings before leaving after issuing a leadoff walk to begin the seventh. Casey Hoorelbeke entered and used a double play and groundout to end the inning.
Rhoads allowed the single run on just four hits in six-plus innings in the victory.
Andrew Cruse (2-2) held Fargo scoreless through his first three frames before a decisive fourth inning. The RedHawks loaded the bases with an error, walk, and single to bring rookie Jake Krause to the plate with nobody out. Cruse hit the Fargo third baseman to force in a run, tying the game at one. Jay Cox followed with a sacrifice fly to center and Mike Coles capped off the three-run inning with an RBI groundout to short.
Cruse suffered the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits in six innings of work.
Steven Stewart and Drew Graham each threw scoreless innings to finish the game for Kansas City. With the tying run at the plate in the ninth, Donnie Smith struck out Ray Sadler and got Jim Fasano to ground out to second to secure his fourth save of the year.
Sadler finished the game 0-for-four to snap a 13-game hit streak.
The T-Bones head home for a 10-game homestand, beginning with a four-game series against the Gary SouthShore RailCats that starts tomorrow night. Kansas City sends Reid Santos (1-2, 7.78) to face RailCats hurler Zach McClellan (1-2, 4.15). First pitch is set for 7:05. Tomorrow is Kids Eat FREE Monday presented by CommunityAmerica Credit Union.
