Late Rally Falls Short for Fielders

June 13, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Lake County Fielders News Release

The Lake County Fielders rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little, too late as they fell to the Gary Southshore RailCats 6-4, in front of 1,343 Fielders fans in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Amos Ramon hit the first grand slam in Fielders history off RailCats reliever Aaron Cook to bring the Fielders within two as the rain poured down in the bottom of the ninth. After Cook walked SS Kyle Higgins, Gary manager Greg Taggert brought in his closer, Andy Shipman, who struck out Joshua Short on called strike three to end the game.

Jake Ruckle made a spot start in place of Corey Bass, his first start of the season, and allowed two runs on four hits in four innings. He took the loss to fall 0-1.

The RailCats scored three runs on only one hit, in a wacky sixth inning. Bass, who came on for Ruckle in the fifth walked three in the inning. The three runs scored on a bases loaded walk, a wild pitch and a Kyle Higgins error. Matt Schweitzer came on with two out and runners at the corners, but stranded both runners when he struck out RailCats shortstop Jay Pecci to end the inning.

Brian McFall made his Fielders debut today, as the designated hitter. The former Kansas City Royals farmhand went 1-for-3 with a single in the seventh inning.

The Fielders are next in action on Tuesday June 15, against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 7:00 pm at Carthage Baseball Field in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
