T-Birds to aid tsunami relief

Seattle Thunderbirds News Release

Seattle, January 5, 2005 - At the Seattle Thunderbirds games this weekend the team will be collecting money to aid those suffering from the tsunami that hit Southeast Asia on December 26.

The Thunderbirds have teamed up with employees of the Port of Seattle to collect money for Northwest Medical Teams at the games this weekend. The T- Birds play the Kelowna Rockets on Friday and the Tri- City Americans on Saturday.

In response to the disaster, Northwest Medical Teams has sent four teams so far - three are in Sri Lanka and one is in Indonesia, with three more teams leaving this week - two to Sri Lanka and one to Indonesia. In treating the victims of this horrible disaster, Northwest Medical Teams volunteers are trying to avert a second disaster - lives lost because of the outbreak of disease. Cases of measles and diarrhea have already surfaced. Medical teams will prevent and treat current cases as well as guard against outbreaks of cholera, typhoid and hepatitis A.

The money collected will go to providing medical teams, which include doctors, nurses and physicians, to travel to areas affected by the tsunami and provide that much needed medical assistance. The money collected will also go towards supplying the medical teams with the necessary medical supplies they need to bring relief to the region.

"As a team we wanted to do something that would make an immediate difference to those affected by the tsunami," said Colin Campbell, Assistant General Manager. "We researched what we could do and found that Northwest Medical Teams would provide that immediate difference."

The Thunderbirds urge their fans to support this effort by donating money at the games. Collections areas will be at both the east and west entrances of KeyArena, and fans can donate before, after and during both intermissions of the game.

Northwest Medical Teams is a non-profit humanitarian aid organization that has been in operation for 25 years. Forbes rated the organization in the top ten charities in the U.S. in a review published in its December 2003 issue, recognizing the organization's 4% operating margin. Delivering 96% of all donations to the mission is accomplished through disciplined cost control and a model of volunteer service, donated medical supplies and teamwork with other agencies that have a presence in the area being served.
