Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, used a six-run second inning to pace a 7-4 victory over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs knocked out starter Felix Doubront with six straight base runners in the inning and six hits in total. Syracuse has now won three straight games and nine of twelve overall, taking the first two games of this series against Pawtucket.
After a 1-2-3 first inning by Felix Doubront, Syracuse (58-67) exploded in the top of the second. Jesus Valdez led off with a double, and Tug Hulett followed with an RBI double in his first at-bat since August 13. After Seth Bynum singled to extend his hitting streak to eleven games, Jeff Frazier provided a crushing blow. The Chiefs' left fielder smashed a three-run home run to left field, giving Syracuse a 4-0 lead.
The Chiefs continued their run of base runners with a Carlos Maldonado walk and Corey Brown double. With runners at second and third and nobody out, Pawtucket (72-56) manager Arnie Beyeler removed Doubront after just one-plus inning of work. Left-hander Royce Ring came on in relief, and the Chiefs tacked on two more runs against him. With one out, Matt Antonelli hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and Chris Marrero followed with an RBI single.
Syracuse starter Yunesky Maya was tremendous in six innings, earning his second straight win. Maya allowed just two runs in six innings, on a fourth-inning groundout from Lars Anderson and sixth-inning single from Daniel Nava. The right-hander allowed just five hits, walking none and striking out five, with 56 of his 76 pitches going for strikes.
The Chiefs tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning courtesy of Bynum. The shortstop launched a home run to right field on an 0-2 count for his second hit of the game. Bynum is now 19 for 42 over his eleven-game hitting streak, raising his batting average from .243 to .278.
Pawtucket would narrow the final score in the ninth inning against Lee Hyde. Anderson doubled to start the frame, and Hector Luna followed with a two-run home run to left field, cutting the score to 7-4. Garrett Mock then relieved Hyde, retiring Brett Carroll and Matt Spring for the final two outs.
Syracuse bids for the series win on Monday night at 7:05. Right-hander Craig Stammen will go for his tenth win of the season, with Pawtucket sending righty Tony Pena Jr. to the mound.
