Syracuse Prevails over Charlotte, 4-3, in Ten Innings on Tuesday Night

June 19, 2019 - International League (IL) - Syracuse Mets News Release

Charlotte, NC - The Syracuse Mets took three separate leads, preserving the final one for a 4-3 victory over the Charlotte Knights in ten innings at BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday night. The win marks Syracuse's third extra-inning victory this season. Dilson Herrera and Luis Guillorme both led the Mets with both players collecting two hits and an RBI in the game.

Syracuse (35-35) scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the tenth inning. With the game tied, 3-3, entering the tenth, Herrera started the frame at second base. Aaron Altherr led off with a walk, putting runners at first and second base. Guillorme followed with a double down the left-field line that scored Herrera to give the Mets a 4-3 lead.

Charlotte (36-33) had the tying run on third base in the bottom of the tenth and the winning run at first base, but Mets reliever Tim Peterson retired the next three batters he faced to end the ballgame. That included a line-drive catch made by Syracuse third baseman Rubén Tejada for the first out of the half inning that prevented the tying run from scoring.

The Knights took the first lead of the ballgame in the first inning. Adam Engel led off with a single and scored on a Jon Jay double to center field for a 1-0 advantage.

The Mets tied the game in the fourth. With one out, Tejada hammered a ball over the left-center-field wall for a home run that knotted the game, 1-1.

Syracuse took its first lead in the fifth. Guillorme doubled to begin the inning, moved to third on a Travis Taijeron groundout, and scored on an Arismendy Alcantara groundout to push the Mets in front, 2-1.

Charlotte responded in the sixth. Daniel Palka doubled and then scored on a Seby Zavala single, retying the game, 2-2.

The Mets regained the lead in the top of the seventh. Herrera led off the inning with his team-leading 15th home run of the season, which gave Syracuse a 3-2 advantage.

After the top of the seventh, the tarp was put on the field and there was a one-hour, 14-minute rain delay.

After the delay, the Knights used one swing of the bat to knot the game in the bottom of the seventh with an Engel homer to make it a 3-3 ballgame, eventually sending the game to extras.

Syracuse and Charlotte continue their three-game series on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:04 p.m.
