Syracuse Mets News Release
Louisville, KY - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost to the Louisville Bats by the score of 6-2 on Thursday night in front of a crowd of 7,315. Devin Mesoraco hit a grand slam for the second consecutive night in a winning effort. The Chiefs have now lost three straight games and drop to 2-5 on their eight game road trip which concludes on Friday.
Louisville (71-54) scored first after being set down in order in the first by Chiefs starter Andrew Kown. In the second inning, Juan Francisco led off with a double, followed by a single by Wladimir Balentien and a walk to Danny Dorn to load the bases. Devin Mesoraco, who hit a walk-off grand slam to win Wednesday night's game, hit a grand slam to left field to put the Bats up 4-0.
After being set down in order in each of the first two innings, Syracuse (64-62) retaliated in the third as Brian Bixler knocked a two-out bases loaded double to score Jamie Burke and Boomer Whiting and cut the lead to 4-2.
Through the first five innings, Kown retired the side in order in all of the innings with the exception of the second. But in the sixth, he was tagged for two more runs as he allowed a leadoff single to Yonder Alonso followed by a two-run homer to Juan Francisco to give the Bats a 6-2 lead.
Kown (1-4) pitched six innings and gave up six runs, six hits, one walk, and struck out six. He was followed by Jeff Mandel and Jason Bergmann who each pitched scoreless 1-2-3 innings out of the bullpen.
The Chiefs scattered one base hit each in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, but didn't have a prime opportunity again until the eighth facing reliever Daniel Ray Herrera. He replaced Sam Lecure (8-3) who went seven innings, gave up two runs on four hits, two walks and struck out six.
Herrera allowed the bases to become loaded on two singled and a walk and had to face Chase Lambin, who represented the tying run. Lambin swun at the first pitch and popped out to the shortstop Zack Cozart to leave the bases loaded and the Bats with a 6-2 lead. The Chiefs went down in order in the ninth.
On Friday night the Chiefs and Bats will play the series finale in Louisville. Syracuse will send RHP Jordan Zimmermann (0-0, 0.75) to the mound against RHP Aaron Harang (0-1, 9.00) in a matchup of two former major leaguers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
