Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell 8-5 to the Toledo Mud Hens Sunday afternoon at Alliance Bank Stadium. The loss snaps Syracuse's six-game winning streak.
Carlos Guillen got things started for the Mud Hens with a two-run blast over the left field fence in the first inning.
In the bottom half of the inning, Josh Whitesell's double with two outs scored outfielder Leonard Davis and trimmed Toledo's lead to 2-1. The hit gave Whitesell his team-leading 29th RBI of the season.
The Mud Hens (25-19) got back on the scoreboard with two more runs in the fifth inning. Jeff Frazier, Casper Wells and Brent Dlugach opened the inning with consecutive base hits, putting runners on the corners for catcher Max St. Pierre. St. Pierre grounded into a 5-4-3 double play but it was enough for Wells to come around from third with Toledo's fifth run of the afternoon.
Outfielder Matt Strieby's three-run home run to straightaway center field in the sixth put the Mud Hens on top 8-1. The home run was Strieby's third of the season and his second of the series.
Syracuse (26-16) narrowed the gap to 8-3 on Luis Ordaz's two-run single in the seventh. Ordaz went 2-3 after coming in as a replacement for rightfielder Kevin Mench. Home plate umpire Chris Bakke ejected Mench in the third after a called third strike.
In his first start of the year for the Chiefs, Ron Villone lasted 2 1/3 innings, surrendering six hits and three runs. Villone falls to 1-2 on the year with the loss.
Enrique Gonzalez (3-4) got the win Toledo. He pitched the first five innings for the Mud Hens, giving up four hits and one earned run. Gonzalez also struck out four and walked two.
Syracuse takes on Toledo again Monday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Stephen Strasburg (3-0, 0.00) will get the ball for the Chiefs against the Mud Hens' L.J. Gagnier (1-1, 3.38). First pitch will be at 7 p.m.
