Switchbacks FC Suffer Early End in Open Cup Campaign
April 7, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release
Colorado Springs, CO - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC experienced their first loss in 2022 as Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC knocked them out of the U.S Open Cup in extra time.
The match started slow as each team worked to get their footing. The Switchbacks lineup reflected several new names, and with Hailstorm playing their first game both teams took time to warm up. The Switchbacks gained a big opportunity 25 minutes in, when #10 Parra from Hailstorm FC was presented with a red card after a reckless elbow tackle that left #31 Erdmann on the ground. The Switchbacks played a man up for the rest of the game, but were unable to capitalize on it.
Both teams accrued multiple chances in regular time, but while Switchbacks held possession for over 70% of the match, they only had two shots on target and were unable to follow through. At the end of regulation both teams were still tied 0-0, but in the 96' Hailstorm got on the board as #19 Jerry Desdunes accepted a pass from #9 Lachlan Mclean to get it across the goal line. A double yellow card for #55 Triston Hodge in the 103' had the teams leveled out again, and the match was over with no other results on the board at the 120th minute.
The Switchbacks will take to the road again for their April 9th match against Las Vegas Lights FC. They will return home on April 16th as they take on Memphis 901 FC. Tickets to that match, and all other matches, available HERE.
Post Game Quotes:
Head Coach Brendan Burke:
Overall thoughts:
"We rotated heavily, we made scheduled subs, so we knew we were taking on a lot of risk tonight by making all those changes and introducing all those guys that haven't played. It was a great opportunity for them and some of them missed it quite frankly, and that's hard but that's part of building a roster and a team - you have to expose guys to uncomfortable situations, and tonight they didn't react well to it. We were up a man for 60 minutes. They had nothing in the game until very late where they had a couple of chances on the counter but it's on us not showing the quality to break them down."
On whether age or inexperience were factors in tonight's roster:
"Both. I think it was both, and we didn't show any cutting edge up top. That's an area that we may have to address. We need depth that can come on and score goals in big moments and in some ways the Open Cup is a big moment, it's a big opportunity for lots of people. Because of our schedule and where we sit as the best team in the USL Championship, that's going to be a tough flag to carry all season with a small squad."
On preparing for another away match after 120 minutes of play:
"Our line up management will certainly play a huge role in that. That's why we wanted Hadji [Barry], Michee [Ngalina], Jeff [Caldwell], [Cam] Lindley, we wanted that core fresh going into Vegas. We took [Zach] Zandi at halftime, we took Dennis [Erdmann] at halftime. I mean, our minds were very much on Saturday.
