December 20, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC announced today the return of winger Maalique Foster for his second season with the team, pending league and federation approval.
"To my teammates, my coaches, fans, and the staff, I'm just happy and excited to be apart of this organization again for the upcoming season," said Foster. "I hope it will be a better season than last season, but I know what it takes. It is gonna take a lot of hard work and dedication. I am ready to get things rolling and really dedicate all my effort to get it done. I'm really excited to be apart of this upcoming season. See you all soon!"
Foster joined the team in 2023 and earned 2,394 minutes in 34 games played. His speed on the wing earned him four goals and four assists, and a 75.6% passing accuracy made him a great asset for the team. Foster also made 49 key passes, the most of any player last season for the Switchbacks.
Foster, 27, joined Republic FC in 2021, and despite sustaining an early-season injury made an impact in 15 appearances over the second half of the season. This past season he had an even bigger impact, as Foster tallied eight goals and one assist, as well as completing 16 key passes and holding a passing accuracy rate of 79.8%. Foster's season highlight, however, came in the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinal when his Panenka penalty kick against Sporting Kansas City helped Republic FC advance to the final after a penalty shootout.
The Portmore native joined Republic FC from the Israeli Premier League club Ironi Kiryat Shmona, on loan from Santos de Guápiles FC of the Costa Rican Primera División. With Santos de Guápiles FC he recorded five goals in 12 appearances.
Foster's previous experience in the USL Championship includes a stint with Rio Grande Valley FC in 2019, where he netted three goals and four assists in 11 matches. He earned Championship Team of the Week honors for Weeks 7 and 11 while with RGVFC.
International play for Foster consists of multiple call ups to the Jamaican National Team the Reggae Boyz, including one this past November, where he has recorded three goals across eight appearances. In his international debut with the team he earned the game-tying goal in a 2-2 draw against South Korea. He was also part of the 2019 Gold Cup squad that advanced to the tournament's semifinals and competed for the country in CONCACAF Nations League.
"Maalique returning for next season is exciting for all of us. He showed growth throughout last season with some superb performances, however they did not get the recognition they deserved in terms of stats," said Technical Director & Assistant Coach, James Chambers. " We know the qualities that he brings and we are very happy to have him in our organization. He has a real desire to get better and we know with his mentality that he will be one to watch in 2024."
