Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Former University of Miami standouts OF Jon Jay and RHP Chris Perez have joined the Swing of the Quad Cities in South Bend, and Jay has been activated, the Swing, in conjunction with the St. Louis Cardinals, announced on Friday. In order to make room on the active roster, RHP Kyle Sadlowski has been transferred to State College of the New York-Penn League.
Perez and Jay join former Florida State OF Shane Robinson in coming to the Swing straight from the Atlantic Coast Conference as members of the 2006 draft class. The three were also teammates on the United States National Team during the summer of 2005.
Jay, 21, was taken 74th overall in the 2006 draft, the second of two second-round picks owned by the Cardinals. In his junior season at Miami the outfielder hit .361 (sixth in the ACC) with six homers and 46 RBI, scoring 77 times and stealing 31 bases in 66 games. The only ACC player to record more runs and stolen bases in 2006 was Robinson. Jay was a first team All-ACC selection in 2005, hitting .408 with 50 runs scored and 52 driven in as a sophomore. In his three years as a Hurricane, the 5-foot-11 native of Miami batted .378 while garnering a list of awards that include being named a Freshman First Team All-American (2004), a member of the College World Series All-Tournament Team (2004), and an ACC All-Star (2005).
Sadlowski, who begun the year in the bullpen before cracking the starting rotation with a series of strong starts in late April and early May, will head to State College. The 22-year-old from Pennsylvania is 4-3 with a 4.86 ERA on the year in 18 games (13 starts). Over his last five starts, however, he has posted a 1-2 with a 6.82 ERA.
The Swing of the Quad Cities roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster accompanies this release.
