Dragons Pull out Comeback Win over Kernels

June 30, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels (4-5, 35-44) got great starting pitching and had an answer (and then some) for every Dayton Dragons (5-4, 40-39) scoring inning on the night. The Kernels were off and running with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back snapping the Dragons five game win streak with an 8-4 victory at Veteran's Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

Daniel Guerrero (LP, 0-1) made his Dayton debut on Friday night at Veteran's Memorial Stadium and unfortunately for the Dragons it was short and forgettable. Guerrero, who replaced all-star Johnny Cueto in the Dayton starting rotation when he was promoted to the Sarasota Reds, was knocked out of the ballgame after just 2.0 innings of work. Cedar Rapids opened the game up with back-to-back singles off the right hander. Guerrero followed with three straight walks, scoring two runs. A sac fly from Mark Trumbo made it 3-0 after one inning.

Dayton came back with a pair of runs off Robert Mosebach (WP, 5-4) in the top of the second inning. The inning featured two balks by Mosebach, which advanced B.J. Szymanski from first to second and later from third base home. Mike Griffin who single following a lead off knock by Szymanski would come home on an infield single by Bradley Key, which narrowed the gap to one run at 3-2.

Guerrero was knocked around again in the second inning surrendering a two run home run to Larry Infante to put the Kernels back up three at 5-2. Infante was a pain to the Dragons all night long picking up four hits in five at bats, driving home three runs and scoring three runs to pace the Cedar Rapids offense. Guerrero's first outing with the Dragons lasted 2.0 innings as he surrendered five earned runs and five hits. He walked three struck out one and threw one wild pitch.

Rainer Feliz (ND) was the next hurler to take the hill for the Dragons and was touched up for three runs in the 2.2 innings he worked. Cedar Rapids scored two more in the fourth to go up 7-2. Infante scored from second base on Feliz's errant throw into center field after trying to start a 1-6-3 inning ending double play. Jordan Renz knocked in his second run on the night, this time an RBI single scoring Hainley Statia.

Jay Bruce, who had gone without a home run in the month of June and hadn't left the yard since the 28th of May, took a Mosebach offering in the fifth inning out to leftfield for a two run homer. Bruce's 11th of the season was an opposite field shot that scored Mike DeJesus who led off the frame with a single and cut the lead to 7-4.

Cedar Rapids would once again answer the Dragons scoring inning with one of its own, picking up a single run off Feliz to run the advantage back up to four at 8-4. Feliz allowed three runs, two earned, in his 2.2 innings on the night with two strikeouts and one walk. Infante continued to hurt the Dragons picking up his third RBI on the night with a single to left.

The story was Mosebach, who picked up his fifth win of the year, throwing his second complete game of the season. The right hander scattered nine hits, struck out seven and hit one batter. He allowed four runs; all earned and was called for two balks.

The Dragons and Kernels continue the four game series Saturday night at Veteran's Memorial Stadium with an 8:00 PM first pitch. LHP Travis Wood (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his first start for Dayton, while Cedar Rapids counters with RHP Robert Mosebach (4-4, 3.21 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Magazine Show at 7:00 PM; the Dragons Pre Game Show follows at 7:30 PM.
