State College Spikes News Release
NILES, Ohio - The State College Spikes ran to win, nabbing three bases that led to three runs, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers put together the big inning with four tallies in the seventh to take a 6-3 decision on Wednesday night at Eastwood Field.
Curtis Washington Jr. took two bags for the Spikes (8-11) and helped manufacture two runs in the process. The Purdue commit walked in the third, then joined with Logan Cook in a double steal that put runners on second and third, with Hylan Hall's sacrifice fly plating Cook for the game's first run.
Washington then generated another run in the sixth, starting with a leadoff walk and a steal of second. The center fielder out of Wabash Valley (Ill.) Junior College advanced to third on Hall's single and scored on Nathan Church's RBI groundout.
State College generated another run on the basepaths later in the sixth as Hall took home despite Kenny Piper being thrown out at second.
However, Mahoning Valley (12-7) retorted with an outburst in the seventh to take the victory. Jack Kelly's bases-loaded single tied the game, followed by Branden Comia's sacrifice fly to give the Scrappers the lead. Sam Crail landed the crowning blow with an ensuing two-run single to put the final margin in place.
Spikes reliever Chris Wall (0-2) took the loss after being tagged with all four Scrappers runs in the seventh. Wall went a total of two innings and faced four batters in his third inning of work. The southpaw yielded two hits and two walks while striking out three batters along the way.
Eric Sapp (1-0) picked up the win for Mahoning Valley as the pitcher of record in the seventh after allowing one hit and two walks in a scoreless top half of the frame and leaving the bases loaded.
Aaron Haase (2) earned the save with a perfect ninth inning in which he recorded two strikeouts.
Thursday, the Spikes complete their three-game series against the Scrappers with a 7:05 p.m. rubber match at Eastwood Field. Right-hander Joe Miceli (0-2), rated third in the Major League Baseball Draft League on the mound in a recent Prep Baseball Report article, is scheduled to get the ball for State College. Mahoning Valley has not yet announced a starting pitcher.
