
Swift Current beats T-Birds in shootout

Swift Current, SK, January 16, 2007 - The Swift Current Broncos defeated the Seattle Thunderbird 2-1 in a shootout Tuesday night at the Centennial Civic Centre in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
Swift Current goalie Travis Yonkman stopped Seattle's first three shooters, Prab Rai, Scott Jackson and Jeremy Boyer.
Seattle goalie Derek Yeomans was up to the task stopping the Broncos first shooters to send the shootout to sudden death. In the fourth round, both goalies made the save, Yonkman on Brett Robertson and Yeomans on Daniel Rakos.
The fifth round proved decisive as Bud Holloway was denied by Yonkman and Zack Smith scored for the Broncos to get Swift Current the win.
The T-Birds are in third place in the US Division with a 20-13-1-11 record. They finish out their six-game Eastern Division road trip in Prince Albert on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. They are 1-2-0-2 on the road trip so far.
Seattle outshot Swift Current 11-6 in a scoreless first period.
Jeremy Schenderling gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead at 5:18 of the second period with a power-play goal. David Stieler and Michael Wilson had the assists.
The Broncos (23-21-1-1) outshot the T-Birds 12-11 in the second period but the T-Birds led 22-18 in total shots going into the second intermission.
Holloway tied the game 1-1 with 1:16 left in the game. Radek Meidl got to the puck on the right boards at the hash marks. Meidl made a cross-ice pass to Holloway stationed to the left of the goal. Holloway one-timed the pass and beat Yonkman for the tying goal. The T-Birds had pulled Yeomans for an extra attacker. Robertson had the second assist on Holloway's 17th goal of the year.
The T-Birds outshot the Broncos 11-6 in the third period.
Seattle outshot Swift Current 4-3 in overtime.
Yeomans made 25 saves on 27 shots and his record is now 15-8-1-9.
Yonkman stopped 35 of 36 shots and his record is now 10-6-1-1.
Defenseman Steve Chaffin, the T-Birds first round pick in the 2006 Bantam Draft, made his T-Birds debut against Swift Current.
The T-Birds return home on Saturday, January 20, to face the Portland Winter Hawks at KeyArena at 7:05 p.m.
