Walla Walla Sweets News Release

WENATCHEE, Wa. - As the Walla Walla Sweets took a one-run lead into the bottom of the sixth inning on Friday, it seemed that another close game was at hand.

But in the eighth inning, they proved just the opposite by scoring nine runs en route to a 15-5 blowout win over the Wenatchee Applesox.

Leading the division, the Applesox appeared to be poised for another winning effort as they followed a scoreless top of the first inning for the Sweets by putting two runs on the board via a two-RBI double by Ty Jackson.

But Walla Walla starter Conner O'Neil rebounded for two scoreless innings. He allowed a run each in the fourth and fifth innings, but would finish with a respectable line of four earned runs allowed over five-and-two-thirds innings while striking out five.

Tom Zarosinski baffled the Sweets for the first three innings, but Jordan Frabasilio walked to lead off the fourth, stole second and third, and scored on an RBI single by Kyle Nixon. After a flyout, Sean Bouchard hit his first triple for the Sweets, driving Nixon home and tying the score.

They got two more in the fifth against Zarosinski, who hit Aldo Ferrante with a pitch to begin the inning, saw an error committed behind him, and allowed singles to Andrew Mendenhall and Kevin Morgan. That chased Zarosinski from the game.

Colton Loomis entered for the Applesox and allowed another single to Kyle Nixon, but then retired the next two batters to end the inning. Loomis (1-1) would pitch a total of three innings in relief, allowing four runs, three earned, and taking the loss for Wenatchee.

But the Sweets' magnum opus came against Jacob Schroeder in the top of the eighth inning. Jarod Gonzales led off with a single, Andrew Mendenhall reached on an error, and Frabasilio bunted the two over. But that was the only out the Applesox could record before the Sweets batted all the way through their lineup, totaling nine runs on the inning to provide the bullpen with a ten-run cushion.

Dillon Dove, who entered with two out in the sixth to replace O'Neil (2-1), allowed an Applesox run in the bottom half on a walk and three base hits, but that was all the home team could manage as Jay Flaa entered in the ninth and shut Wenatchee down to give the Sweets their sixth win of the season.

Three men- Gonzales, Morgan, and Nixon- finished with three RBI for the Sweets. All except two in the starting lineup collected at least one hit, and despite only recording three walks, the Sweets were able to make the most of their eighteen hits. Gonzales, J.J. Robinson and Mark Contreras each hit their first home runs of the season over the final four innings of play.

Meanwhile, Ty Jackson went 2-for-5 with two RBI for the Applesox, and Nick Brooks went 3-for-5, but home team could only manufacture five runs out of their twelve hits, as they stranded a total of eleven runners on base.

The Sweets return to action Saturday when the play their second game of the series against the Applesox at 7:05 PM at Paul Thomas Stadium in Wenatchee.
