HarbourCats Beat Blaze on Baseball Day in Victoria

June 21, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release

On a picture-perfect weather night, the Victoria HarbourCats kept it clean on defence and got the job done with the bats in posting a 5-0 non-league victory over the Langely Senior Blaze of the Pacific International League on Saturday night, in a game played in front of 1,036 at Sports Traders Diamond at Royal Athletic Park.

The two teams will meet in Duncan at Evans Park (6257 Somenos Road) on Sunday, a 1:05pm start -- the game is presented by Duncan Junior Baseball, and is a free admission game with a large crowd expected.

The HarbourCats, who have lost four-straight West Coast League games, used nine different pitchers for an inning each to get people sharp in advance of a series at home against the Bend Elks, starting Monday night at Sports Traders Diamond. The nine pitchers combined to allow five hits, strike out five, and walk three -- Logan Lombana, who was not expected to start, got the call and went one inning. Alex Garcia, Tim Peabody, Carson Schneider, Mark Marinch, Quintin Torres-Costa, Alex Fagalde, Sean Watkins and Ryan Keller all saw time, and no one surrendered more than one hit in their inning of work.

Jesse Peters, who gave up three unearned runs and struck out six in five innings, was the losing pitcher. Ryan Eiswerth gave up two earned runs and fanned five in three innings of work. The HarbourCats left 10 runners on base, and Langley DH Matt Cratty had the lone extra base hit of the game, a double.

Griffin Andreychuk was 3-3 to lead a nine-hit Victoria barrage. The game saw the HarbourCats debut of catcher Jake Lesinski (Cal Poly) and Gabe Clark (Oregon State).

An error at second base in the second inning set up three Victoria runs, and the HarbourCats pushed single runs across in the sixth and eighth innings.

Preston Ryan is expected to get the start for the HarbourCats on Monday against the Elks.
