Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders rode a tidal wave of six home runs to an 8-5 win over the PawSox at McCoy Stadium on Friday night in 10 innings.
INTERNATIONAL (LEAGUE) MAN OF MYSTERY: Tyler Austin slammed a career-best three big flies for the RailRiders, tying the SWB franchise record. He delivered a two-out, three-run shot in the first and leadoff solo jobs to left in the fourth and right in the sixth. He finished the night with five RBIs. Austin had eight doubles, four homers and 27 RBIs over 73 games played and 299 plate appearances with last year's RailRiders, slashing .235/.309/.311/.619. In 18 games and 73 plate appearances at Triple-A this season, he has eight doubles, six homers and 20 RBIs, slashing .308/.370/.708/1.078.
THREE MUSKETEERS: Austin became the third SWB player to launch three homers in a single game. Gary Bennett blasted three dingers at Buffalo in an extra-inning game on Aug. 16, 1998. Zoilo Almonte turned the trick at Gwinnett on July 23, 2014. Austin became the second IL player to smash three homers in a single game this year, joining Rochester's Adam Brett Walker who accomplished the feat on May 21 at Durham.
TRIO OF TATERS: The RailRiders opened the 10th with back-to-back-to-back home runs to grab control of the game for good. Pawtucket pitching had retired 11 straight RailRiders before Donovan Solano, Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez all left the yard in succession.
SOL MAN: Solano launched his third homer of the year on a 2-for-5 night. A .259 hitter after an 0-for-4 day versus Charlotte on June 8, he has since gone 21-for-52, slashing .404/.436/.558/.994 with eight multi-hit efforts over that 14-game span.
JUDGMENT DAY: Judge's blast tied him for the IL lead in homers at 14. He paces the team and stands tied for fourth in the loop with 42 RBIs. He saw his batting average bottom out at .221 after an 0-for-3 day versus Columbus on June 2 during an 0-for-24 tailspin. Since then he has reached base in 18 of 20, going 26-for-71 with seven homers, 17 RBIs, 16 walks and 24 runs scored. In that time he has slashed .366/.494/.732/1.227. His season-long OBP has risen by 60 points (.285-.345) with 50% of his overall walk total in the 20-game run. All seven of those homers have come over his last 12 games played and five in his last six.
GARY! GARY! GARY!: Sanchez's homer was his first off a lefty. He had seven against right-handed hurlers entering the game. Five of his roundtrippers have come on the road where he has slashed .337/.400/.600/1.000.
NEXT TIME GADGET, NEXT TIME: The RailRiders posted more wins against Pawtucket (13-6) than any other team in 2015. They went 5-3 in the Ocean State and 8-3 at PNC Field. At 6-2 against the PawSox this season, they have taken 14 of 19 and 25 of 33 in the series going back to 2014. That includes wins in 16 of 19 at McCoy Stadium, outscoring the PawSox, 93-46.
ROAD WARRIORS: The RailRiders own the IL's best road record at 23-13. They stand on pace to win 46 games away from NEPA. That would break the franchise record of 45 set by Marc Bombard's 2002 Red Barons who won 91 total games with players like Chase Utley, Marlon Byrd, Brett Myers and Joe Roa. At PNC Field, SWB has slashed .254/.315/.386/.701 while scoring 4.00 runs/game. On the road, the team has slashed .269/.344/.418/.762 while scoring 4.97 runs/game.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders fell a homer shy of the single-game team record...The Red Barons bashed seven at Toledo on May 31, 1998...SWB remains the IL's lone undefeated team in extra-inning games (4-0)...Starter Luis Severino gave up four runs for the first time at Triple-A and an MiLB-career-worst nine hits...His only other career outing with nine-plus hits allowed came in his 2016 debut with the Yankees at Detroit when the Tigers posted 10 during his five frames...Conor Mullee fired a perfect 10th for his sixth save...He ranks among the IL's best relievers in BAA (1st, .158), K/9 IP (2nd, 11.34) and fewest baserunners/9IP (1st, 7.56)...Mountain Top's Matt Wotherspoon (1-0) suffered a blown save but also got his first Triple-A win with three innings of one-run relief...Pawtucket went 3-for-17 (.176) with men in scoring position and stranded 11 on base...The latter number tied Syracuse's futility on April 17 for the most men left on by an SWB foe in a game this season...The PawSox own the IL's third-best team ERA (3.33), but have allowed the second-most homers (62) trailing only Charlotte (64)...McCoy Stadium has witnessed 38 (61%) of the homers, but the staff's road ERA (3.32) is slightly better than its home mark (3.33).
