Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
PIECE OF PIE: The RailRiders could not overcome Felix Pie's two-run home run as they fell to the Indianapolis Indians on Wednesday afternoon, 2-0. The game endured a rain delay that lasted nearly two and a half hours, but was able to be completed. SWB must win tonight to avoid losing the series.
DEAD AT A DOZEN: Zoilo Almonte's hitting streak stalled at 12 games yesterday. The reigning IL Batter of the Week was enjoying his first day out of the lineup this season. He had batted third in each of the first 30 games. But the RailRiders needed to insert him late defensively. His lone plate appearance came with Almonte as the tying run and two outs in the ninth. He flied out to left to end the game. He hit .356 (16-for-45) with two homers, seven RBIs and three runs scored over his string of success. Almonte reached base safely in 17 straight games as part of the run, the top on-base surge by a RailRider this season. His streak is tied for the longest in the IL this season with Lehigh Valley's Cesar Hernandez. The top active streak as of now is an 11-game run enjoyed by both Gwinnett's Jose Constanza and Norfolk's Travis Ishikawa.
TOUGH TIMES: Outfielder Melky Mesa struck out in all three of his at-bats yesterday. His second-inning whiff made him the fourth man in the minors with 50 strikeouts on the year. His 52 total strikeouts lead the IL and tie him with High-A Visalia's Evan Marzilli for the most in the minors.
THE BARE MINIMUM: The RailRiders sent the minimum to the plate in six of their nine innings yesterday. The team had four men bat in the eighth and ninth thanks to a two-out hit batter and an infield hit respectively. Out of the 27 innings through three games on the series, the RailRiders have sent the minimum to the plate 12 times and four or fewer 20 times.
AIN'T IT GRAND?: Tonight, outfielder Curtis Granderson begins a rehab stint with the RailRiders. He was injured in his first at-bat of 2013 when he was hit by a J.A. Happ pitch on Feb. 24 in a spring training game and suffered a broken forearm. Tonight marks Granderson's second tour of duty with SWB, as he joined the franchise in 2010 for a rehab assignment. He hit .250 (4-for-16) during that stay with two RBIs in five games. The three-time Major League All-Star led the Yankees last season in home runs (43) and RBIs (106). Joe Girardi has indicated that Granderson will play all three outfield spots during his stay and may do the same when he returns to New York.
TROUBLE AT HOME?: The RailRiders sit at 6-11 (.353) in home games with losses in five of six while they have gone 12-2 (.857) on the road including wins in 12 of their last 13. The splits back-up the records. At home, the team is hitting .210/.316/.298 and averages 2.9 runs/game. On the road, the triple slashes rise to .283/.354/.433 and the team posts 5.0 runs/game. Also consider that four of the team's five doubleheaders have taken place on the road, making eight of the 14 road games seven-inning affairs, while the only extra-inning game came at home. Only two active players are hitting above .250 at home. That includes Jeff Farnham, who is 1-for-2 in his one home game played. Eight of the 15 that have seen road playing time are hitting .302 or better away from Moosic. The home/road splits skew for the pitching staff as well. At home, the RailRiders' arms have assembled a 3.48 ERA with 14 home runs allowed over 150 innings. On the road, the ERA plummets to 2.42 with only four homers in 108 innings.
ROSTER MOVES: In addition to Granderson starting his rehab tonight, the Yankees also added tonight's starter, Caleb Cotham, to the SWB roster from Double-A Trenton and placed lefty reliever Juan Cedeno on the DL.
TICK TOCK: Yesterday's game took 2:29 to play. Its lengthy delay, which started once the game was official after the fifth, took 2:28.
