Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls salvaged the final game of a four-game series with Syracuse, winning 4-2 Thursday night in front of 8,227 fans at the DBAP.
The Bulls had dropped the first three games of the series as their offense hit an early-May tailspin. Durham got seven hits against Syracuse starter Ross Ohlendorf (L, 3-4, 4.57) on Thursday night however, and scored runs in the third, fourth and fifth to hold off a Chiefs' comeback.
Brandon Guyer and Mike Fontenot hit back-to-back doubles in the third to give the Bulls their first lead in 15 innings. The Bulls added a run in the fourth when Tim Beckham chopped a single over third base and into left, scoring Leslie Anderson, who had walked, from third base.
Syracuse tied the game in the fifth against Bulls starter J.D. Martin (W, 4-1, 3.69), who gave up five hits and walked none in seven innings. Micah Owings opened the inning with a home run off the Diamond View II building in left field. Zach Walters tripled to deep centerfield two batters later and scored on a Carlos Rivero groundout.
Durham responded in its half of the fifth. Fontenot singled and advanced to third on a Rich Thompson double. Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to put the Bulls back on top 3-2.
The Bulls manufactured an insurance run in the eighth when Thompson singled, advanced to second on a groundout, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch. Josh Lueke earned his seventh save of the season, working 2.0 scoreless frames.
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs invade the DBAP on Friday night to begin a four-game series. RHP Jake Odorizzi (3-0, 2.65) starts for the Bulls at 7:05pm against LHP Adam Morgan (1-2, 3.89).
