Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
The Red Sox today selected right-hander Jose De La Torre from Triple-A Pawtucket to the active roster. To make room for De La Torre on the 40-man roster, right-hander Joel Hanrahan was transferred to the 60-day disabled list, and to make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-hander Allen Webster was optioned to Pawtucket after last night's game.
Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcements.
For De La Torre, this is his first major league stint. The 27-year-old has appeared in 10 games for Pawtucket this season, all in relief, going 1-0 with one save, a 1.56 ERA (3 ER/17.1 IP), and 17 strikeouts. He has held opponents to a .089 batting average (5-for-56), the third-lowest mark among International League relievers, including a .029 average (1-for-35) over his current seven-game scoreless streak (11.2 IP). Acquired by Boston in a trade with Cleveland last July, De La Torre owns a 2.77 ERA with 368 strikeouts in 357.0 innings over seven minor league seasons. He will wear No. 65 and will be available for tonight's game.
Hanrahan, 31, had been placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with a right forearm strain, his second stint on the disabled list this season after missing 15 games from April 14-29 due to a right hamstring strain. In nine relief outings for the Red Sox this season, he is 0-1 with four saves, a 9.82 ERA (8 ER/7.1 IP), and five strikeouts.
Webster, 23, was recalled from Pawtucket on Tuesday and made his second career major league start last night against Minnesota. He allowed eight runs in 1.2 innings last night and has given up 11 runs (10 ER) with seven strikeouts in 7.2 innings pitched over two starts for the Red Sox this season. In four starts for the PawSox this year, Webster is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA (6 ER/20.0 IP) and 26 strikeouts compared to six walks while holding opponents to a .171 average (12-for-70).
