Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

NARROW NIPPING: Prospect right-hander Dellin Betances (1-2) set season-high marks with seven innings pitched and seven strikeouts while Dan Johnson homered for the first time as RailRider in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's 2-1 defeat of the Clippers last night. The RailRiders' eighth win in 10 games pushed them above the .500 mark for the first time this season at 9-8.

BETANCES AT HIS BEST: Betances posted his longest outing since going seven frames on July 26, 2012 at Harrisburg while a member of the Double-A Trenton Thunder. He had not posted a quality start at the Triple-A level since May 30, 2012 versus Toledo when he earned a win with six innings of two-run ball. In three career starts against Columbus, Betances has gone 2-1 with a 1.83 ERA and a .143 batting average against. That includes 18 strikeouts against just seven walks over 19.2 innings.

CLIPPING THE CLIPPERS: Dave Miley's club won for the seventh time in eight meetings with Columbus going back to last season. Miley mentored the Clippers in 2006 during the team's last year as the top minor league squad for the New York Yankees.

BIG LEAGUE BOMB: Johnson's home run came against former Boston Red Sox star Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2). Johnson had faced "Dice-K" multiple times in the big leagues, going 0-for-8 with a walk and two strikeouts against the two-time WBC MVP.

POLK HIGH, FOUR TOUCHDOWNS, ONE GAME: Johnson's Tuesday homer marks his first since going deep thrice in the final game of the 2012 Major League season with the White Sox. Coincidentally enough, his huge day came at Cleveland against the Indians, the parent club of the Columbus Clippers.

ALL GOOD THINGS...: Outfielder Thomas Neal hard several hard outs but finished the game 0-for-4 with a run scored. That snapped the team's longest hitting streak of 2013 at nine games. He went 16-for-33 (.485) during his string of swinging success. On Tuesday, he flied to deep center, lined into a 6-3 double play, reached on a hard, hopping 1-6 fielder's choice and flied to right.

THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER: Last night, Juan Cedeno and Preston Claiborne each tossed a scoreless inning of relief. Cedeno posted his third hold while Claiborne bolted down his second save. The RailRiders' bullpen has not allowed a run in four games since Claiborne gave up three in his Saturday outing against Syracuse. Over its 9.1 scoreless innings, the RailRiders' bullpen has allowed just five hits, issued three walks and notched nine strikeouts. SWB is 9-0 when leading after seven innings.

IT COMES IN THREES: Scott Aldred's pitchers have more than done their part in the team's three straight wins, all at home. The RailRiders have outscored their foes 15-3 in that time, allowing one run in each game. During that time, opposing hitters have gone 16-for-93 (.172) against SWB hurlers with just three extra-base hits, five walks and 24 strikeouts.

GETTING DEFENSIVE: Entering this morning, SWB leads the loop in team fielding percentage (.982) with a league-low 11 errors in 17 games. The squad trails only Toledo (.481) among IL squads in cutting down would-be base stealers. Eight of the 18 (.444) men that have shown sticky fingers have been gunned down by Austin Romine (6-14) or Bobby Wilson (2-4).

OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders won for the first time when the opponent scores first...It also marked the first win when posting five hits or less...The team logged a season-low three hits in the victory...At 2:16, Tuesday's contest is the fastest nine-inning game for the team this season.
