Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, and the Rochester Red Wings were suspended in the top of the 11th inning on Wednesday night. The Chiefs were trailing the Red Wings, 6-5, before the game was delayed due to rain. The two teams will make up the remainder of the game, Thursday at 5:00, before a regularly scheduled nine-inning game.
Syracuse (8-10) got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. After a Jeff Kobernus single, Will Rhymes grounded into a fielder's choice and Kobernus was put out at second base. Following a base hit by Chris Marrero, Micah Owings ripped a single up the middle to score Rhymes from second, giving the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
The Chiefs were at it again in the bottom of the third, with two more runs to pad the lead. After two quick outs, Rhymes singled into left field, bringing up Marrero. Marrero then belted a two-run home run into left field, his sixth of the season, to give Syracuse a 3-0 lead.
Syracuse put two more on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Chris Rahl nailed his first home run as a Chief. Carlos Rivero, who walked earlier in the inning, scored on the play as well, increasing the lead to 5-0.
Rochester (5-14) finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Evan Bigley laced a solo home run into right field, making the score 5-1.
The score remained at 5-1 until the top of the eighth inning when Rochester came storming back. Two consecutive hits from Doug Bernier and Ray Olmedo brought Chris Herrmann to bat with two runners in scoring position. His single up the middle plated both Bernier and Olmedo, reducing the Syracuse lead to 5-3. One batter later, Brandon Boggs skied a ball to left field that was dropped by Micah Owings, moving Herrmann to second. After a passed ball by catcher Carlos Maldonado, Colabello's grounder scored Herrmann from third base and moved Boggs to third, shrinking the Syracuse lead to 5-4. After a Harson groundout, Chiefs manager Tony Beasley brought in left-hander Fernando Abad from the bullpen. The first batter Abad would face, Joe Benson, doubled into left field, scoring Boggs and tying the game at 5-5.
The Red Wings broke the 5-5 tie in the top of the 11th inning. The frame started with a Bigley single against Mike Crotta followed by an Eric Fryer walk. The next batter, Doug Bernier, laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving the runners to second and third. After an intentional walk to Ray Olmedo, Herrmann singled into left field, plating Bigley from third. After two pitches to Brandon Boggs, crew chief Jeff Gosney called for the tarp, delaying the game, which would later be suspended.
The Chiefs and Red Wings will play Thursday's regularly scheduled nine-inning game 30 minutes after the conclusion of Wednesday's resumed game. Chiefs right-hander Yunesky Maya and Red Wings right-hander Shairon Martis are the scheduled starters.
