EDENTON, NC - The Fayetteville SwampDogs (31-17, 13-7) scored eight runs on four home runs and cruised to an 8-0 victory over the Edenton Steamers (33-16, 15-8) as James Simmons pitched a complete game two hitter on Friday night at Historic Hicks Field.

It started and ended with the long ball for the Fayetteville SwampDogs in a match-up of the top two teams in the Coastal Plain League. Mike Tauchman hit a solo homer in the top of the first, his third of the season followed by two hits and a walk that loaded the bases for Blake Beemer. Beemer connected on his first round-tripper of the season, a grand slam that made it 5-0.

Fayetteville, against Taylor Braun (Wright State University), added two more in the third on Reed Harper's two-run home run that made it 7-0. Harper went three-for-four on the night.

Against Matt Duncan (Morehead State University) in the top of the seventh tyler Ding homered, a solo shot to make it 8-0. All eight runs the SwampDogs scored came by way of the home run in the 8-0 win.

James Simmons ball danced around the Steamers bats all night long. He only allowed two hits, he walked a batter and hit a batter. No Steamer ever made it second base and Simmons ended the game retiring the final 10 batters of the ball game.

He improved to 1-1, and Braun fell to 3-3 on the season.

Game two of the scheduled double header was rained out in the bottom of the second inning and has been washed away from the schedule for good.

The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 53 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
