Marlins Swim Past Snakes, Win Sixth Straight

ASHEBORO, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins (20-29 overall, 10-12 second half) won their sixth straight game, 2-1, over the Asheboro Copperheads (25-23-1 overall, 9-12 second half) by scoring a single run in the eighth and ninth innings.

In the ninth inning Reed Gordy led off with a single. After a stolen base and a wild pitch, Corey Bass ripped a triple to left-center field, scoring Gordy and putting the Marlins on top 2-1.

Morehead City plated the game's first run in the eighth inning when with two outs Jarrett Higgins and Sam Ott notched consecutive singles. A wild pitch advanced both runners, and on the play Asheboro catcher Matt Reinstetter threw to second base but no one was covering, scoring Higgins.

The Copperheads answered in the bottom of the eighth inning when Bowen Woodson walked and scored on a double from Lucas Witt to tie the game at 1-1.

William Prince (2-1) earned the win, tossing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief in the eighth and ninth innings. Dylan Dickens (4-1) took the loss, allowing one run in the top of the ninth inning. Both starting pitchers received a no-decision as Dario Santangelo went seven shutout innings and allowed just four hits. John Tuttle threw eight strong innings for the Copperheads, surrendering just one unearned runs on eight hits.

The Marlins are back home tomorrow evening to take on the Petersburg Generals. It's Pink Jersey Auction Night and the second night of Hope Week at Big Rock Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. as Matt Sutor has the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.

Notes: The run allowed in the eighth inning broke a streak of 26 straight scoreless innings for Marlins pitching... Ott and Eric Peterson each had two hits... The six straight victories doubles Morehead City's previous season-long winning streak of three.
