Sanford Mainers News Release

Monday night will be a night that the Mainers hope to forget sometime in the near future as they fell to the Keene Swamp Bats 8-3 in a game where it seemed like everything was working against them.

It all started with a one and a half hour rain delay that drew four different possible start times. By 8 p.m. the game was finally under way and the Swamp Bats were more than ready to go, jumping all over Mainers starter EJ Ashworth right out of the gate.

Zach Lucas led things off with a single into center and advanced to second on a stolen base. Ashworth was able to get Matt Ford to line out, but then gave up a single to JP Sportman that scored Lucas. Sportman came around to score two batters later on a double by Brian O'Grady. The Swamp Bats loaded the bases and then scored two more times on a single off the bat of Steve Swingle.

Swamp Bats starter Nathan Kirby had the Mainers shut down during his entire outing. He allowed only three hits in six innings of work, walking three and striking out ten.

The Swamp Bats got to Ashworth again after loading the bases in the third inning. Eric Gutierrez scored on an error by Will Cooper at second. During the next play O'Grady crossed the plate when the Mainers failed to turn the double play and recorded the out at second only.

They would grab two more runs later in the game, one in the fourth and one in the sixth.

The Mainers scraped away in the later innings, scoring once in the bottom of the seventh when Nic Wilson touched home plate after Dylan Moore soared a pitch by Gutierrez at first and into the Swamp Bats dugout, allowing Wilson to come around from second.

They showed life once again in the bottom of the ninth when Wilson led off with a double deep to right center field and was joined on the base paths by John Howell after being issued a walk. With one out on the board, Jake Thomas doubled to deep right scoring both Wilson and Howell.

That's all the runs the Mainers were able to plate in the game as they drop back down to .500 at 6-6. They will be back at Goodall Park again tomorrow to face the Plymouth Pilgrims. Nick Poore is expected to make the start for the Moose. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
