
Sussex tops Rox 8-1 in series finale

BROCKTON, MA - The Sussex Skyhawks scored four times in the first inning and had a 6-0 lead before the end of the third inning en route to a 8-1 victory over the Rox before a sellout crowd of 5,180 fans at Campanelli Stadium. The Rox managed just one run in the ninth inning on a LF Travis Gulick RBI single. The Rox dropped the final two contests in the series to fall to 7-10 in 2006, four games behind the pace set by first-place Sussex at 11-6. RHP John Boker took his first loss of the season for the Rox in four starts. The Rox have a day off on Monday and resume action on Tuesday against the 2005 Can- Am League champion Worcester Tornadoes at 7:05 at Campanelli Stadium.
With Sussex leading 1-0 in the top of the first frame, DH Dick Daly hit a three-run HR to right field to give the Skyhawks a 4-0 lead. In the third, 1B Ryan Lehr, who missed a HR in the first by a matter of inches, took Boker deep to right for his second HR of the year, giving the Skyhawks a 6-0 advantage. Boker did pitch through six innings, allowing seven runs on ten hits. Sussex added a run in the sixth against Boker and one in the ninth against RHP Jason Wylie to lead 8-0 going to the bottom of the ninth.
Gulick singled home SS Eugene Julien from second base in the ninth inning to break a 16 inning scoreless streak by the Rox offense. The Rox had just five hits in the contest, one of which was a single by DH Guye Senjem in the third inning which extended his hitting streak to 9 games. The Rox continue the homestand on Tuesday when RHP Robert Averette (0-3, 3.38 ERA) fires the first pitch against Worcester at Campanelli Stadium at 7:05 PM.
