Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER- The Tornadoes dropped the finale of what turned out to be a tough home stand by a count of 3-2 to the North Shore Spirit on Sunday at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field in front of a sell out crowd of 2,992. The Tornadoes dropped five out of six on the home stand including being swept in a three game set by the Spirit.
The problem for the Tornadoes again was the dormancy of the bats. Although the Tornadoes had six hits, which was the most of any game in the series they were able to punch in just two runs, both coming via a two-run home run by third baseman Zach Strong.
Spirit starter Joey Siak (1-0) kept the Tornadoes off balance through six innings, by throwing many off-speed pitches and mixing in the fastball. Junior Guerrero (2-2) was the hard luck loser for the Tornadoes who worked his way out of many jams but ended up giving up two earned runs in five innings.
The game was scoreless into the top of the fourth when Garrett Weir recorded his seventh consecutive hit, this one a single to center. Weir promptly stole second base, and came across on a costly two-out error on a sinking line drive by Tornadoes center fielder Lucas Taylor. The Spirit added two more in the fifth on a two-run home run by Spirit catcher and former Red Sox third-round draft pick, Jonathan Devries.
Strong's home run hit off the top of the left field wall and came down on the other side of the fence to cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning. Both bullpens came on to pitch exceptionally well,
For the Tornadoes, Chris Shank came on to throw three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit. Dave Byard pitched a scoreless ninth inning including two strikeouts.
Dennis Robinson threw two hitless innings for the Spirit before making way for the closer, Kevin Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald came on to secure his third save in three days by retiring the side in order to finish off the sweep.
It was the third sell-out of the year at Hanover Insurance Park, the Tornadoes will continue play within the Commonwealth Cup when they take on the Brockton Rox, Tuesday night at Campanelli Stadium.
