Surf Stay Hot; Win 8th Straight
August 14, 2002 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Atlantic City Surf News Release
The Atlantic City Surf defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-5 before 1728 at the Sandcastle Wednesday night.
The Surf benefitted from sloppy Somerset defense as Atlantic City scored five unearned runs to win its eighth straight game. Atlantic City is now 23-8 in the second half and 28-11 under manager Mitch Williams.
The Surf victory combined with Camden''s 3-2 loss to Pennsylvania left Atlantic City with a three-game lead over Camden in the South Division of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Brian Williams got the win for the Surf on a night when he was not sharp as he allowed five runs on seven hits and walked four. But the Surf bullpen closed the door on Somerset, allowing just one run in the final four innings. Surf supercloser Craig Mattson got his 24th save for Atlantic City and Jake Chapman pitched two hitless and scoreless innings for the Surf. Somerset dropped to 14-16.
The two teams conclude the series Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. on Mitch Williams Bobblehead Doll Night at the Sandcastle. Maximo Nunez will pitch for the Surf against Somerset''s Jim Bullinger. Atlantic City has now beaten Somerset five straight times.
