Atlantic City Surf News Release

Little Falls, N.J. - Signed by the Atlantic City Surf before Tuesday's game, starting pitcher Freddy Flores (1-0) earned the victory as the Surf defeated the New Jersey Jackals, 6-1, in a Can-Am League contest at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday evening.

The West Creek, N.J., resident, who also started one game in right field in July, limited the Jackals to one run on two hits in five innings of work, fanning four. Aaron Easton and Rory Shortell held New Jersey at bay the rest of the way, combining to allow one run over the final four innings.

After a rain delay lasting nearly an hour and a half, New Jersey (12-19) tallied the game's first run, as leadoff hitter 2B Marcus Sanders hit a solo home run to lead off the first inning. Atlantic City (19-11) then responded with a run in the second; CF Josh Burrus singled, moved to second and third on a pair of groundouts, and scuttled home on a passed ball by Jackals' C Craig Maddox.

The game stayed 1-1 until the seventh, when the Surf broke the game open by scoring four times. 3B Gil Zayas and 2B Brad Thoma hit back-to-back RBI singles, before SS Anthony Granato brought home a run with an RBI fielder's choice and LF Joe Burke drove in Granato with a run-scoring single of his own. Atlantic City then tacked on an insurance run in the eighth with a C William Plaza sacrifice fly, making the score 6-1.

The Jackals threatened in the ninth, with DH Matt Lauderdale driving in a run with an RBI single, but potential game-tying run Sanders flied out with the bases loaded to end the game.

Burrus and Thoma led the Surf's offense, both going 2-for-4 on the evening. For New Jersey, both Sanders and Lauderdale had a pair of hits.

Jorge Acosta (1-3) was credited with the loss for the Jackals, giving up two runs, one earned, in six innings pitched, striking out seven.

With the victory, Atlantic City stays a game behind Quebec for first place in the second half, as the Capitales also won on Friday evening, defeating Ottawa, 9-3. The team also moves into sole possession of second place in the league's overall standings, a half game ahead of Worcester, who was rained out tonight in its game at Brockton.

The two teams meet again on Saturday evening, with the Surf's J.C. Huguet (8-5) facing New Jersey's Ted Serro (3-3) at 7:05 p.m.
