Surf Release Batiste, Ink Brian Simmons

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (May 20, 2003) – The Atlantic City Surf have announced the release of third-baseman Kim Batiste and the signing of switch-hitting outfielder Brian Simmons.

The Surf have also released catcher Jimmy Gonzalez and outfielder Vernon Spearman.

Batiste, a former Phillie and member of the 1993 National League Championship squad, was batting .233 with one home run and six RBI in 12 games played for the Surf this season.

Simmons, who joins the Surf after spending last season in Triple-A Fresno (San Francisco Giants), played 119 total games on the Major League level with the Chicago White Sox in 1998-99 and the Toronto Blue Jays in 2001.

The McMurray, Pa., native, was originally selected by the White Sox in the second round of the 1995 draft. Simmons is a lifetime .267 minor league hitter and will be making his independent league debut with Atlantic City.

The Surf take on the Pennsylvania Road Warriors tonight, at 6:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle.
