Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, May 20-The Newark Bears announced today the signing of free agent left-handed pitcher Rolando Viera to a contract. The club also announced that it had released right-handed pitcher Chris Clark.
The 29 year-old Viera was born in Havana, Cuba and played in Cuba for most of his professional baseball career. He came to the United States a couple of years ago and was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 7th round of the 2001 draft.
The 5'10", 180 pound Viera appeared in 48 games last season for double-A Trenton and triple-A Pawtucket, finishing the season with a 5-1 record and 10 saves combined. He was released by the Red Sox this past March.
"We're going to start him off in the bullpen," said Bears pitching coach Pete Filson. "The plan, though, is that he is going to join our starting rotation as soon as possible."
Clark was 0-1 with a 24.30 ERA in 4 games and 3.1 innings pitched this season.
The Bears begin a six-game road trip tonight in Camden with a game against the Riversharks. Steve Gagliano (0-2), looking for his first win of the season, starts for the Bears against Ben Simon (0-1).
