Surf Hold Off Bears in 7-6 Victory

ATLANTIC CITY _ The Atlantic City Surf clubbed four home runs and then held off another Newark rally to defeat the Bears 7-6 at torrid Bernie Robbins Stadium Thursday.
The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for Atlantic City, which is now 7-12 in the second half and 40-42 overall.
Newark is 10-8 and 31-50 overall.
Newly-acquired Dario Delgado broke a deadlock at three with a solo homerun for Atlantic City in the sixth inning and then Melvin Rosario added a two-run shot off Newark starter and loser Joe Gannon, 5-5 After Joe Jiannetti clubbed a solo shot to dead centerfield, his 11th, the Surf held a 7-3 lead. But the Bears scored a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth before Surf reliever Ben Grezlovski finally retired Jonathan Thomas with two runners on the ninth to earn his seventh save before 2110.
Surf starter Mark Persails worked five innings and allowed three runs, two of which were earned. While Persails struck out six he walked eight as he appeared to stuggle in the heat as the temperature on the field hovered near 100 degrees.
Charlie Hesseltine relieved Persails and worked 2 1/3 innings to get the victory, his first.
Victor Rodriquez continued his hot hitting for the Bears as he was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Surf open a three-game series against the Lancaster Barnstomers Friday night at 6:35 p. m. at Bernie Robbins Stadium. A post-game fireworks show will follow the action with all tickets priced at $10 for walkup sales prior to the game.
