Bears fall short to Surf, 7-6

NEWARK, NJ - August 3, 2006 - The Newark Bears were unable to complete a comeback as they fall short in the series finale 7-6 against the Atlantic City Surf Thursday afternoon at Bernie Robbins Stadium. Despite the loss, the Bears won two out of the three games in the series and are 10-8 in the second half of the season.

Trailing the Surf 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning, Bears third baseman Victor Rodriguez delivered his second run scoring hit of the game, a two-run single to tie the game at 5. The Surf, however, took back the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth led by a solo home run by designated hitter Dario Delgado, his eighth of the season, followed by a two-run home run by catcher Melvin Rosario, his sixth of the season. Third baseman Joe Jiannetti added a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, his 11th of the season, to put the Surf ahead 7-3.

The Bears added two runs in the top of the ninth with an RBI double by right-fielder Nick Steppe scoring second baseman Matt Brunson, and a sacrifice-fly with bases loaded by center-fielder Anthony Sanders to cut the lead to 7-6.

Rodriguez led the Bears offense going 3-for-4 with three singles and three RBI, while Steppe finished 2-for-4 with a single, double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Rosario finished the day 2-for-4 with one run scored and three RBI, for the Surf.

Joe Gannon (5-5) took the loss for the Bears allowing six runs on ten hits in six innings striking out five, while Charlie Hesseltine (1-1) earned the victory allowing one run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings striking out two. Ben Grezlovski picked up his seventh save of the season.

The Bears begin a three-game series against the Road Warriors Friday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, with first pitch scheduled at 7:05 pm. Gates open at 6:05 pm to Britney Spears Baby Safety Night. Any fan who dresses as a baby, presents a baby toy, or brings their child (4 and under) will receive free admission to the ball park. First 2,000 fans (18 and over) will receive scratch-off cards presented by New Jersey Lottery. AAA will be on hand to pass out information on car seat safety and raffle off a FREE car seat.
