Surf can't produce enough offense in loss to Skyhawks

Atlantic City Surf News Release

Atlantic City, N.J. - Atlantic City Surf SS Anthony Granato had three hits for the second consecutive game, but it was not enough as the visiting Sussex Skyhawks won, 9-3, in a Can-Am League affair on Thursday evening at Bernie Robbins Stadium, their second victory in the three-game set.

The first three hitters in the Surf order, Granato, C Joe Burke and DH Clyde Williams, combined to go 7-for-14 on the evening as Atlantic City put together eleven total hits. However, Sussex starter Kyle Ruwe (4-1) largely stifled the league's second-best offense, throwing a complete game for his league-leading fourth victory of the season. The sidearming righthander fanned five Surf hitters while walking just one.

Atlantic City (11-9) built an early 2-0 lead, tallying one on Burke's RBI double in the first and another on an RBI fielder's choice from Williams in the third. After not registering a hit against Surf starter Jim Wladyka through the first three innings, Sussex scored three in the fourth on LF Alex Frazier's three-run home run, and added another four in the fifth on an RBI single from CF Ron Perodin, a fielding error that brought home two runs, and a bases-loaded walk to PH Matt Hackney, putting the score at 7-2.

The Skyhawks tallied another two in the ninth on DH Walter Young's single, which brought home Perodin and SS Kevin Rios. Atlantic City put its final run on the board in the bottom half of the frame with Granato's RBI single.

Sussex (10-10) spread its eight hits among seven different players, with 1B Matthew Weston's 2-for-4 evening the only multiple-hit game for the Skyhawks.

Wladyka (1-2) took the loss for Atlantic City, allowing four earned runs in four and one-third innings. Walker Whitley relieved Wladyka and threw two and two-thirds solid innings of relief, not allowing a hit.

The Surf travel to Brockton to begin a three-game set with the Rox Friday night. Brian Rodaway (3-1) takes the mound for Atlantic City, while Wayne Lundgren (1-2) will toe the slab for Brockton.
