New Jersey Jackals News Release

Nashua, NH - New Jersey third baseman Chris Kelly hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull the Jackals within one, but the Pride held on for the 5-4 victory on Thursday morning at Historic Holman Stadium. The loss was New Jersey's eighth in its last nine games.

New Jersey opened up the scoring in the second inning. Kelly began the frame by lacing a stand-up triple past a diving Jeremy Pickrel in right field before scoring when the next batter, first baseman Juan Tejeda, singled up the middle to make it 1-0 Jackals. That score held until the bottom of the fifth as Jared Stawarz and Jackals' starter Ryan Pacyna were locked in a pitchers duel. In the fifth, Nashua took a 2-1 lead. Pickrel reached on an error to start the inning and came around to score when catcher Luis Rodriguez doubled on a well-executed hit-and-run to tie the score at one. Three batters later, Rodriguez scored on a sacrifice groundout by center fielder Vinny Pennell. Both runs were unearned. In the bottom of the sixth, Pickrel hit a ball deep to right center that carried out of the park. The wind-aided home run, Pickrel's second of the season, gave Nashua a 5-1 lead.

In the top of the eighth inning, shortstop Casey Gordon led off with an infield single. After center fielder Zack Smithlin flew out, second baseman Marcus Sanders reached on a base hit which brought Kelly to the plate. Kelly homered off Nashua reliever Adam Piechowski, clearing the brick wall near the 307-foot sign just inside the left field foul pole. That cut the Jackals deficit to 5-4. In the ninth, Pride closer Andrew Weimer allowed a two-out hit by left fielder Andrew Larsen, but retired the Jackals to earn his league-leading seventh save of the season. Stawarz (1-0) earned the win in his first start of the season, allowing one run on six hits over six innings. Pacyna (1-1) took the loss, going six strong innings while surrendering five runs (three earned) on eight hits. The Jackals return home on Friday night when they open up a three-game series at Yogi Berra Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with Michael Vicaro taking the hill at Yogi Berra Stadium. If you can't make it out to the game, be sure to catch every pitch via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the pregame show beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
