Atlantic City Surf News Release

Worcester, Mass. - Eight of Worcester's nine starters had base hits as the Tornadoes defeated the Atlantic City Surf, 8-2, in a Can-Am League game on Monday night at Fitton Field.

The Surf scored the game's first pair of runs in the second inning. After 1B Eddie Kim, C William Plaza and 3B Gil Zayas singled to load the bases, 2B Brad Thoma brought home a pair of runs with an RBI double.

It was all of the offense that Atlantic City (14-7) could muster, however, as Worcester (12-9) scored runs in each of the next five innings to take the lead for good. In the Tornadoes' half of the second, LF Francisco Caraballo hit a two-run blast to left to tie the game. C Alex Trezza then gave Worcester a 4-2 lead in the third with a two-run double to center.

In the fourth, RF Scott Grimes drove home two more with a home run to left, doubling the Tornadoes' lead, 6-2. SS Chuck Jeroloman hit a fifth-inning solo blast of his own, before Grimes laced an RBI single to right in the sixth, completing the scoring on the evening.

Caraballo and Grimes both paced the Worcester offense with three hits each, while 3B Mike McMillan went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. For the Surf, Plaza went 2-for-4. Thoma's double was the only extra-base hit of the evening for Atlantic City.

Junior Guerrero (6-4) earned the victory with a strong outing for the Tornadoes, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings of work, striking out five. Eddie Pena and Anthony Sullivan held the Surf hitless through the final three frames. Brian Rodaway (8-6) picked up the loss for Atlantic City, giving up seven runs on nine hits in five innings while fanning five.

With the loss, the Surf's lead is reduced to one game over second-place Quebec, and two games over the third-place Tornadoes.

The two teams return to action on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. J.C. Huguet (7-4) will be on the hill for the Surf, while Tom Cochran (11-0) toes the slab for Worcester.
