Super sweet 16th win at home
March 7, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas - The Brahmas celebrated their "Sweet 16" in an unorthodox fashion with a 5-3 victory over the Odessa Jackalopes for their 16th consecutive win at the NYTEX Sports Centre.
With his parents in attendance, Tyler Skworchinski made the family proud scoring Texas' first goal of the night on the powerplay at the 11:45 mark. Assists were awarded to Pete Rouleau and Jordan Cameron. The teams had eight shots a piece headed into the first intermission.
Four goals were scored in the second period, starting with forward Travis Banga who planted himself in front of Alexandre Vincent's goal and was able to bang one past the Odessa netminder's blocker. Brandon Benedict and Craig Minard assisted on the powerplay goal. Minutes later, Brahmas defenseman Nathan Saunders, in his return from a two game suspension, broke up a potential three-on-one Jackalopes opportunity midway in the period, maintaining the Brahmas two goal lead. Relentless play with the puck by Greg McConnell behind the Jackalopes goal gave way to a Kevin McLeod goal from the point, his 18th of the season. Saunders and McConnell were credited the assists. The Brahmas third goal came as a wakeup call to Odessa as they registered two unanswered goals on Brahmas goaltender Brett Jaeger to pull the Jackalopes within one shot.
Odessa scored on the Brahmas in the third period to tie the game, but that was as close as Texas would allow their Southern Conference rivals as they took advantage of a major penalty call for boarding on Jean Bourbeau at the 12:56 mark in the final period. With twelve seconds remaining in the powerplay Jason Deitsch sent a bullet past Vincent for the 4-3 lead. Just as the soldout crowd at the NYTEX Sports Centre felt that they could breathe, the Brahmas found themselves in penalty trouble against the top powerplay in the league. Fortunately for Texas, the Brahmas lead the league in shorthanded goals and Jordan Cameron, the league leader in shorthanded goals, gave the Brahmas the finishing touch with an empty net shorthanded goal for the 5-3 win. Texas outshot Odessa 36-26 and are now 25-3-1 at home.
The Brahmas will get a couple of days to rest before facing the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Tuesday night at the NYTEX Sports Centre. Game time is 7:05 PM. For ticket information please contact the Brahmas Box Office at (817) 336-4423.
