New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.]-The Scorpions fell in a shootout for the first time this season 4-3 to Oklahoma City on Saturday night. New Mexico earned one point in the loss to draw within two points of the final Southern Conference playoff spot.

It took awhile to get things going as both teams were shaking off bus legs from playing road games the prior night. Bill Vandermeer put the Blazers on the board with a rebound goal near the midpoint of the first period.

New Mexico tied the game as Seth Leonard tipped in Michael Beynon's one timer 1:56 into the second period. Oklahoma City grabbed the lead back as D.J. Jelitto tipped in his 24th goal of the season at the 4:24 mark.

With the Scorps on the power play, Beynon got his second goal of the game as his slap shot ricocheted off the cross bar and into the net. The Blazers reclaimed the lead as Jason Murfitt scored on the man advantage as teammate Josh Patterson set up a perfect screen in front of the net.

The prettiest goal of the night came from Jordan Foote. The rookie walked around defenseman Jason Sawyer and towards the net. Foote made another great move on goaltender Doug Groenestege and shot the puck into the open net, tying the game at three.

The Scorpions went up 1-0 in the first round of the shootout as Neil Trimm scored. New Mexico held the lead until the fifth round when Jeff MacDermid scored for the home team. In the extra round, Simon Lambert lifted a backhand shot into the net for the game winner.

The Scorpions will get back on the ice Friday night in Arizona. The game starts at 8:05 p.m. Mountain Time and can be seen on the CHL Network.
