Suns win first half division title in style

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

Jacksonville, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns won the Southern League South Division first half championship Wednesday as the Suns improved to 41-20 in a 4-1 Wednesday victory over the Huntsville Stars.

The celebration was delayed around 15 minutes as the Suns waited on the results of the Carolina-Montgomery game. When the Mudcats defeated Montgomery 7-1, the Suns had clinched the first half pennant. Jacksonville is assured of a playoff spot to defend its 2005 Southern League Championship.

Jacksonville has won 16 of their last 17 games and eight in a row.

Suns starter T.J. Nall pitched a seven inning gem in his fourth start of the season, allowing one run on six hits with no walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts.

On the other side, the Suns offense scored two runs in the second inning on a Huntsville error and a single from Wilkin Ruan to open a 2-0 lead.

The Stars scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to cut the Suns advantage to 2-1.

That lead held until Jacksonville's Craig Brazell unleashed a tremendous two-run homerun over the bleachers in right field during the bottom of the eighth off of Huntsville reliever Russ Rohlicek to open up a 4-1 lead.

Nall improved to 3-2 in the win while Corey Thurman fell to 2-5 in the loss. Mark Alexander saved his 13th game of the season, tied for the third-best in the Southern League.

Jacksonville and Huntsville continue the five-game series Thursday at 7:05 p.m. with Jacksonville right-hander Danny Muegge facing Huntsville right-hander Tim Dillard. The Blues Brothers will perform on Thursday Throwdown, with $1 Budweiser throughout the game. Tickets are available by calling the Suns box office at 904.358.2846.
