Blakely blasts Barons past Stars, 5-4, in 10 innings

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Darren Blakely's solo home run in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Birmingham Barons to a 5-4 victory over the Huntsville Stars on Tuesday evening, June 6th, in Southern League action at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

Blakely, who entered the game as a pinch runner for Corey Smith in the 8th, deposited the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the 10th inning from Huntsville reliever Brett Evert over the right field fence. Birmingham starter Ryan Rodriguez (6.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 3 K; no decision) allowed just one earned run in 6.2 innings of work. Barons' reliever Brian West picked up the win, pitching a scoreless ninth. Ricardo Nanita went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Micah Schnurstein went 1-for-3 to extend his current hitting streak to ten games. Smith and Rob Sasser each recorded multiple hits as the Barons (26-34) posted their second consecutive victory.

Steve Moss scored a pair of runs while Adam Heether drove in two for the Stars (23-35). Evert fell to 0-2 with the loss while starter Jeff Housman (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) received a no decision.

Birmingham will begin a five-game series with the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx in Jackson, Tenn., on Wednesday evening, June 7th, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. LHP Ray Liotta (1-6, 3.53 ERA) is listed as the probable starter for the Barons, while LHP J.R. Mathes (5-4, 3.59 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Diamond Jaxx.
