MOBILE, AL- After seven scoreless innings, the BayBears hit two home runs in the eighth inning Wednesday to beat the Tennessee Smokies 3-0. Luis Cruz hit a two-run shot for his sixth on the season, and Michael Johnson hit a solo home run, his fourth. The rally came off Clint Goocher (3-4), who suffered the loss for Tennessee. The victory was the 1,000th in the managerial career of Gary Jones.
Mobile?s Sean Thompson pitched seven innings Wednesday, and did not allow a run. Thompson allowed five hits, walking two and striking out one. Tennessee starter Micah Owings pitched six shutout innings, allowing just four BayBears hits. Dale Thayer pitched a scoreless top of the ninth for his 10th save this season.
The BayBears and Smokies will continue the series Thursday night at 7:05. Jared Wells (4-2) will pitch for Mobile against Garrett Mock (1-6) for Tennessee. All BayBears games can be heard on 1480 AM WABB, Comcast Cable Channel 18, and on the internet via mobilebaybears.com.
