Suns split doubleheader with Braves

ROME, GA - The Hagerstown Suns (21-31) split a doubleheader with the Rome Braves (28-23), winning the first game 2-0 before falling 5-1 in game two.

Cole Kimball (5-8) led the way in game one, pitching seven shut-out innings and allowing just two hit, earning the win and collecting the Suns first complete-game shutout of the season. All double headers in the South Atlantic League are comprised of two seven-inning games.

The Suns scored both of their runs in the first game in the top of the first inning off Braves starter Jeff Locke (5-11). Locke also tossed a complete game, surrendering just five hits and striking out five.

Suns second baseman Valerio Heredia started off the game with a single to right field and two batters later was driven in on a Tim Pahuta single. Pahuta, Hagerstown's first baseman, advanced to third on DH Jesus Valdez's single and scored on a passed ball, giving the Suns a 2-0 lead.

Hagerstown did not score again in the game, but the slim lead was plenty for Kimball, as the righthander struck out five and allowed just two walks in his seven innings of work.

Game two did not go as well for Hagerstown, as the Braves got on the board first with an RBI single by first baseman Freddie Freeman after right fielder Jayson Heyward doubled with two outs in the inning.

The Suns tied the game in the top of the second as DH Garrett Bass scored on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Robert Jacobsen.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the third inning when Rome scored two unearned runs off Suns starter Chris Lugo (2-1).

Lugo took the loss for Hagerstown after allowing four runs, two earned, in four innings of work.

The fourth and fifth runs for Rome came in the bottom of the fifth as Freeman singled with two outs off Lugo, who was then replaced by reliever Ryan Harrison. Rome left fielder Cody Johnson then proceeded to hit a 3-1 fastball over the right field wall off Harrison, giving the Braves a 5-1 lead.

The home run was Johnson's 21st of the season.

Lefthander Edgar Osuna earned the win for Rome, pitching six innings and allowing just one run on five hits.

The Suns and Braves will play the fourth and final game of the series on Thursday, August 14th at 7:00 p.m. Rome currently leads the series two games to one.
