Lexington Legends News Release
APPLEBEE'S PARK (Lexington, KY) -- The Lexington Legends are proud to announce that Wandy Rodriguez has been elected to the Lexington Legends Hall of Fame as part of the 2008 class. Rodriquez, known during his time with the Legends as Eny Cabreja, anchored the Lexington Legends pitching staff in 2002. The right-handed pitcher led the 2002 team in wins (11), games started (28), innings pitched (159.1) and strikeouts (137).
Rodriguez also ranks high on some of the Legends single-season and career records lists. Rodriguez has the fourth most career innings pitched for the Legends (159.1) and third most games started for the Legends in a career (28). Rodriguez holds the Legends' single-season record for games started (28) and holds the distinction of having the second most innings pitched in a season (159.1), fifth most wins in a season (11) and seventh most strikeouts in a season (137).
Rodriguez's success didn't stop after he left Lexington, as he made his major-league debut for the Houston Astros on May 23, 2005. Rodriguez went 10-10 with a 5.53 ERA in 2005 in 25 games for the Astros. Rodriguez has pitched in parts of the last four seasons with Houston where he has a career record of 35-37 with a 4.93 ERA and 427 strikeouts in 551 innings pitched. This season, Rodriguez is 7-4 with a 3.89 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 104 innings.
In 2007, Rodriguez's 158 strikeouts led the Houston Astros. The strikeout total was the ninth most by an Astros' left-handed pitcher in a single season. Rodriguez also posted the fifth lowest home ERA in the National League (2.94) and the fourth highest strikeouts-per-nine innings rate (7.78) of any left-handed pitcher in the National League. Rodriguez pitched in two games in the 2005 World Series for the Houston Astros where he posted a 2.45 ERA.
Fans were asked to vote for a total of three players on the 2008 Lexington Legends Hall of Fame ballot at home games and online during July and August. Over 1,500 votes were tabulated in the past month.
Rodriguez was the only player who received the necessary amount of votes to be elected. The Lexington Legends Hall of Fame was created in 2005 and has seen 10 Legends members elected over three years. Tommy Whiteman was the only player selected to the Hall of Fame in 2007.
The induction ceremony is scheduled for August 26th on Fan Appreciation Night at Applebee's Park. A representative of Wandy Rodriguez will be present to accept the pitchers' inauguration into the Legends Hall of Fame, prior to the 7:05 first pitch. Fans can call the box office at 422-7867 to reserve a seat.
