
Captains Take Two From Catfish

(Columbus, GA) - The Captains had a big offensive inning in both games of the doubleheader and the pitching staff held Columbus to just two runs as the Lake County Captains swept a doubleheader from the Columbus Catfish on Wednesday 4-1 and 5-1. The Captains have played eleven doubleheaders this year and this was there sixth sweep.
In game one, the Captains got an RBI ground out from Doug Pickens in the second inning off of Catfish starter Brian Flores to take a 1-0 lead. The Catfish tied it up against Captains Joey Mahalic plating a run in the third inning. The Captains came back in the fourth inning scoring three times on a solo home run by Karexon Sanchez, a wild pitch by Flores and a RBI single from Ron Rivas to make it 4-1.
Mahalic upped his record to 7-4 going six innings allowing one run on five hits, walking one and striking out two. This was his first win since July 3rd. Mike Pontius pitched a scoreless seventh inning to record his second save. Flores took the loss and his record dropped to 7-6.
In game two, it was tied at 1-1 when the Captains erupted for four runs in the sixth inning against Catfish reliever Justin Garcia. Matt Brown led off the inning with his eighth home run of the year. Later in the inning, Adam White doubled home a run and Adam Davis singled home two more and the Captains led 5-1.
Chris Archer threw five innings and allowed one run on five hits, walking one and striking out four and saw his record improve to 4-8. Garcia took the loss and his record dropped to 2-5. Garcia had not allowed a run in his last 12.1 innings of work.
On Thursday, the Captains will wrap up the series with Columbus by sending RHP Joanniel Montero (2-6, 5.60) to the mound against Catfish RHP Jason Ragan (7-8, 3.67). Game time is 7:00 PM. All Captains games can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.
The Captains travel to Rome after Thursday's game to start a four game series with the Braves before returning home on Wednesday August 20th to wrap up the regular season portion of the home schedule. The Captains will host the SAL Play Offs beginning on September 5th.
Tickets for all Captains home games including the 2008 SAL Playoffs are on sale at the Classic Park box office, by phone at 440-954-WINS (9467) or at captainsbaseball.com. Tickets for the Playoffs remain the same as regular season game tickets, $9 reserved seat, $7 bleachers, juniors, and seniors, $6 lawn. Lawn seats for the Playoffs will only be sold once the reserved seats and bleachers are sold out. The $7 group rate will still apply to groups of 20 or more.
