Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets and San Francisco Giants have announced they are extending their Player Development Contract. The extension is a two year deal that will extend through the 2010 season.
"We are extremely happy to extend our deal with the Giants another two years," GreenJackets General Manager Nick Brown said. "The Giants have consistently provided us with some of the top young talent in the system and year after year the team is one of the top teams in the Minors."
Over the first three years as a Giants affiliate, the GreenJackets compiled a 258-157 (.622) record while making the post season twice and winning one South Atlantic League Southern Division Title.
"The Giants have enjoyed being a part of the Augusta community and have particularly appreciated the commitment of the GreenJackets' ownership and management team in the assistance they provide in helping us develop our young players," Giants Director of Player Personnel Bobby Evans said. "We look forward to continuing an already great association with the GreenJackets."
The GreenJackets and Giants first season together was in 2005 and Augusta compiled a record of 77-59 just missing the playoffs while holding the second best record in the South Atlantic League.
In 2006 the GreenJackets rolled through the season compiling a record of 92-47, the most wins in all of Minor League Baseball along with the best winning percentage among full season teams. The GreenJackets also made their first trip to the post season since 2001 and won their first SAL Southern Division Title since 1999 when Augusta won the SAL Championships.
The GreenJackets again made it to the post season in 2007 finishing with a record of 89-51 (.636) and again finished with the best winning percentage among all full season teams in Minor League Baseball.
In 2008 Augusta again is loaded with some of the top talent in the organization with top pitching prospect Madison Bumganer (12-3, 1.59 ERA) and top overall prospect in the Giants organization Angel Villalona. The GreenJackets look to make the playoffs for a third straight year and currently holds a three game lead in the Southern Division. The GreenJackets are 74-45 (.622) this season, the second best winning percentage among full season teams in Minor League Baseball.
In 2008, four players currently playing with the Giants called Augusta home while in the Giants organization; pitchers Jonathan Sanchez (2005) and Brian Wilson (2005) along with infielders Emmanual Burriss (2007) and Eugenio Velez (2006). Brian Bocock (2007) was the Giants opening day starting shortstop in 2008.
The GreenJackets are currently playing an eight game home stand that will continue through Monday, August 18. Augusta is taking on the first-place team from the Northern Division, the West Virginia Power, and has opened up the home stand winning the first two games.
The GreenJackets are celebrating their 20th Anniversary this season of baseball returning to Augusta. For information on tickets and all the promotions scheduled for this season call the GreenJackets at 706-922-WINS or visit www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
