
Suns Shutout by Drive in Series Finale, Split Series

GREENVILLE, SC - The Hagerstown Suns (14-17) got shutout for the fourth time this season on Tuesday afternoon, as they lost the finale of their four-game series against the Greenville Drive (17-15) by a final of 4-0. The two teams split the series, and Hagerstown finished its seven-game road trip with a 4-3 record.
On Tuesday the Suns were limited to just four hits and one walk, and none of the four hits went for extra bases. Starting RHP Reed Reilly (2-1) threw the first six scoreless frames for the Drive to earn the win. He allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out three. LHP Williams Jerez followed, surrendering just two hits over three innings to earn his first save of the year. RHP Phillips Valdez (3-2) started for Hagerstown and suffered the loss. He gave up one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out four over four innings.
The first win for the Drive in the series came in the third game of the series on Monday night. The Drive broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run frame in the bottom of the seventh to take command of the game and eventually hold on for a 5-4 victory. Both runs in the seventh were driven home on a ground ball single to left by 3B Rafael Devers. RHP Kuehl McEachern then entered the game for the Drive and limited the Suns to one earned run on two hits over the final two innings to pick up his third save of the season. RHP Mario Alcantara (2-0) blew an opportunity for a save but came away with the win for Greenville. He pitched two innings in relief, allowing one unearned run on one hit and one walk while striking out one. RHP Mario Sanchez (0-2) suffered the loss for Hagerstown. He threw two innings in relief, allowing two earned runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one.
In game two of the series on Sunday afternoon Hagerstown recorded its third shutout of the season in a 2-0 win. Both Suns runs crossed the plate in the seventh thanks to an RBI double by DH Grant DeBruin and a sacrifice fly off the bat of LF Jeff Gardner. Starting LHP Jalen Beeks (2-1) gave up both seventh inning runs and thus got charged with the loss. In seven innings pitched he gave up six hits while striking out four and he did not walk any batters. Three Hagerstown pitchers combined to limit Greenville to just three hits in the game. It was LHP David Napoli (2-0) who earned the win for the Suns by tossing the final four frames. He surrendered one hit and one walk while striking out six.
In the first game of the series on Saturday night the Suns won a slugfest against the Drive 11-7. The teams combined for 37 hits in the game, with Hagerstown collecting a season-high 20 hits. Everyone in the Suns lineup had a hit in the game, and six Suns had multi-hit games. Hagerstown raced out to an 8-0 lead after half an inning and never looked back. All eight of those first inning runs were charged to starting RHP Jamie Callahan (0-3), who got tagged with the loss for Greenville. He lasted just 0.1 innings, allowing seven hits and walking one. Starting RHP Austen Williams (4-1) earned the win for Hagerstown. He threw five innings, giving up one earned run on six hits and one walk while striking out three.
In total Hagerstown outscored Greenville 17-16 in the series, but the Drive outhit the Suns 40-36. The Suns next head back home to Hagerstown to take on the West Virginia Power (18-13) in a five-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Thursday, May 14. In the first game of the doubleheader on Thursday the Suns will send RHP Jefry Rodriguez (0-2) to the mound for his fourth start and appearance this season. He will match up against RHP Yeudy Garcia (0-2) for West Virginia. First pitch for game one on Thursday is scheduled for 5:05pm.
