Suns season opens this weekend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns, 2005 Southern League Champion and Minor League Team of the Year, return to the Baseball Grounds in defense of the title this week. The Suns open the season with a ten-game homestand, welcoming the Chattanooga Lookouts and Montgomery Biscuits to Jacksonville.

Opening night is this Thursday, April 6, and in celebration of last season's title, the first 3,000 fans through the gates will receive a replica of the 2005 Southern League Championship ring, courtesy of Memorial Hospital, First Coast News 12&25 and Rock 105. On Friday, all fans will receive a 2006 Suns magnet schedule, compliments of Vault, WJXT TV-4 and The Eagle 96.9. After the game, fans will enjoy the first NAPA Friday Family Fireworks of the season!

Saturday night will feature the first of a collectors' series of "Team of the Year Bobbleheads" to be given away throughout the season. The first 3,000 fans in the park on April 8 will receive an Andy LaRoche bobblehead, sponsored by BellSouth and AM930 The Fox. LaRoche, expected to start the season in Jacksonville, will be briefly available to sign these limited editions of his likeness.

On Sunday, the Suns celebrate spring with a special Easter Egg Hunt on the field for all kids 14 and under, starting at 2:00pm. All kids will get an egg on Sunday! Also, the first 1,500 children will receive a wobblebobble of one of the Suns new mascots, Sunny the Bunny! Sunday's events are sponsored by Eggland's Best and Lite 96.1FM. Kids rule the ballpark on Monday for the first school field trip of the season. This special 11:05am game will be alcohol free.

The Montgomery Biscuits come to town on Tuesday for the first Fifty Cent Family Feast night of the season, the first Businessperson's Special Day game of 2006 and the much-anticipated return of Thursday Night Throwdown and $1 Buds on Thursday night. Friday, April 14th will be Southpaw's Birthday Party, featuring Southpaw and his new friends Sunny the Bunny and Seymour Baseball the Sea Monster, along with all of their mascot friends, with birthday cake ice cream for all kids, compliments of Blue Bell Ice Cream. NAPA Friday Family Fireworks follow the game.

The homestand concludes on Saturday night with Jackie Robinson Night. The first 3,000 fans will receive a replica Brooklyn Dodgers hat and the Suns players will all wear commemorative #42 Brooklyn Dodger jerseys that will be auctioned off for charity and many special tributes to the legendary ballplayer will be made throughout the night. Jackie Robinson Night is sponsored by Swisher International, the Jacksonville Urban League, the Florida Star, WB17 and V101.5FM.
