JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jesus Rodriguez scattered three hits over seven innings while Jamie Hoffmann drove home three runs while leading the Jacksonville Suns (55-69, 22-32) to a 7-3 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits (65-58, 31-22) in front of 8,418 Friday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The current series is tied two games each with the Suns holding a seven games to two advantage in the season series against Montgomery.
Suns starter Jesus Rodriguez (4-4) picked up the victory after allowing one run and three scattered hits over seven innings. The only run was a two-out, solo homerun from Montgomery's J.T. Hall in the seventh inning. The native of Coahuila, Mexico walked one and struck out three in a start forced by the promotion of Suns southpaw Eric Cyr to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Jacksonville's offense gave Rodriguez an early cushion, scoring two runs in the second inning. Montgomery starter James Houser, Jr. (3-3) worked on a pitch count in his first outing since returning from the disabled list (knee). After a leadoff walk in the second inning, Adolfo Gonzalez doubled in the runner for a 1-0 lead before being thrown out at third base. Houser, Jr. then left the game in favor of Jino Gonzalez, who allowed a Ryan Rogowski double and Jamie Hoffmann RBI single for a 2-0 Suns lead.
The Suns scored three runs in the third inning against Gonzalez with an Ivan DeJesus, Jr. leadoff homerun and Kelley Gulledge two-run homerun for a 5-0 lead.
Jacksonville opened a 7-0 advantage in the fifth inning on a Jamie Hoffmann two-run double. The runs were charged to Gonzalez as the runners were inherited to reliever Colter Bean.
After J.T. Hall hit the seventh inning homerun for a 7-1 score, Montgomery continued to rally in the ninth inning against Suns reliever Anthony Tomey. The right-hander walked three in the frame with a Matt Spring single and a balk driving in two runs for a 7-3 score. With the tying run on deck, reliever Brent Leach (9) entered to induce the game-ending pop fly for the save.
