JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Pitching on short notice at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Friday night, Jesus Rodriguez (4-4) was brilliant, leading the Jacksonville Suns (22-32; 55-64) to a 7-3 win over the Montgomery Biscuits (31-22; 65-58).

The Biscuits remained just one half game behind the Mississippi Braves for the South Division lead.

Rodriguez, who learned Thursday night that he would start due to expected starter Eric Cyr's promotion to Triple-A, threw seven strong innings, allowing only three hits and one walk. He allowed a solo home run to Biscuits left fielder J.T. Hall as he tired in the seventh. By then, his offense had built a large lead.

James Houser (3-3) made his return from the disabled list by starting the game. He walked two in a scoreless first and faced two hitters in the second inning, allowing a walk and an RBI double before departing for piggybacking lefty Jino Gonzalez.

The Suns tore into Gonzalez with another run in the second and three runs in the third, including home runs by Ivan DeJesus and Kelley Gulledge. Jacksonville touched him again in the fifth for two more runs before his departure. Relievers Colter Bean and Ryan Reid each threw two innings of scoreless relief.

The Biscuits scored twice in the ninth inning on a Matt Spring single and a balk by reliever Anthony Tomey.

The Biscuits and Suns play the rubber game of the series on Saturday, at 12:05 p.m. Central Time. Montogmery lefty Mike Prochaska takes on Jacksonville lefthander Cody White.
