MOBILE, Ala. - With the teams trading the lead early and the score tied into the sixth, Brandon Burgess used his only swing of the night to crack a two-run homer, helping the BayBears prevail over the Mississippi Braves for the third straight night, 7-5.

Burgess' dinger put Cesar Valdez (3-3) in line for the victory after he worked six innings and battled without his best stuff, allowing five runs on nine hits.

Mississippi (62-62, 32-22) grabbed the lead early on a single by Reid Gorecki to bring home Matt Young in the first. Gorecki also scored on a groundout by Jordan Schafer to make it 2-0.

The lead wouldn't last long for the Braves as Deunte Heath (3-5) allowed a run in the first on a Javier Brito double and four more in the second to put the BayBears (54-69, 25-28) up 5-2.

A two-run double by Schafer and an RBI double by Van Pope tied the score in the fifth before the pop by Burgess put the home team ahead to stay. Matt Green worked a scoreless inning in relief, and Jose Marte (S, 7) picked up the final six outs.

The BayBears continue their 10-game homestand on Saturday when they play the final game of their five-game set with the Braves. Hector Ambriz (5-12, 5.27) goes up against right-hander Tommy Hanson (7-3, 3.39) at 7:05 p.m. Call (251) 479-BEAR for tickets or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
