Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (5-5) took a number of potential hits away with some superb defense Sunday afternoon, helping Hagerstown notch its second shutout of the season in a 5-0 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws (5-6). The win gave the Suns their first series win of the season.
Starting RHP Phillips Valdez (1-1) used the excellent defense behind him to limit Lakewood to five hits over six innings. He picked up his first win of the season, and RHP Ryan Ullmann threw the final three scoreless frames without allowing a hit for his first save of the campaign. Combined they walked just one and struck out two.
Ironically, the first bit of Suns offense was helped by subpar defense by the BlueClaws. Hagerstown 1B Jose Marmolejos led off the bottom of the second inning by lifting a fly ball to left field. The ball popped out of the mitt of LF Cord Sandberg, allowing Marmolejos to reach second. A wild pitch by Lakewood starter RHP Chris Oliver (1-1) allowed Marmolejos to reach third, and he scored when catcher Raudy Read knocked a ground ball single to left field. Later in the inning Read scored the second run of the frame on a groundout to short which would have been the third out of the inning had it not been for the error by Sandberg.
The three other Hagerstown runs crossed the plate in the fifth. With runners on the corners and one out, CF Dale Carey and Marmolejos hit back-to-back doubles. Carey's double drove in both baserunners, while Carey then scored on the double from Marmolejos. Marmolejos finished with two hits in three at-bats and he reached base four times.
All five Hagerstown runs were charged to Oliver, who suffered the loss. His final line read five innings pitched, three earned runs given up on six hits and one walk while striking out two. RHP Jessen Therrien threw the other three innings for the BlueClaws.
The Suns next welcome the Delmarva Shorebirds (5-5) to Municipal stadium for a three-game series beginning Monday April 20. The Suns will send RHP Austen Williams (1-1) to the mound for his third start of the season on Monday. He will square off against LHP Bennett Parry (0-0) for Delmarva. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm.
